Cambridge International Education (CIE) is an international Cambridge qualifications provider catering to over 10,000 schools across more than 160 countries. It operates as a non-profit, non-teaching division of the University of Cambridge. Recently, CIE announced the cancellation of an AS Level exam paper that was prematurely leaked online. Roughly three months ago, CIE began receiving reports and evidence of a possible leak of the AS Level Mathematics exam paper conducted on May 2,2024. Consequently, CIE decided to launch a thorough investigation into the matter.
Following an extensive investigation lasting nearly three months, Cambridge International Education issued an official statement. They confirmed via numerous social media sources that the Cambridge AS Level Mathematics paper had been leaked before the students sitting for the exam, leading to its cancellation. This caused disappointment among many students who had diligently prepared for the test.
Cambridge International Education circulated a letter to schools stating that they would award “assessed grades” for the AS Level Mathematics paper to ensure equal and fair treatment of students. This implies that students’ grades will be determined based on their performance in other mathematics exams. If students are not content with this, they have the option to retake the Cambridge AS Level Mathematics exam in November 2024.
Cambridge also declared, “Our main concern is to ensure fairness for the vast majority of students who did not engage in dishonest practices.” They further emphasized their aim to eliminate any benefits obtained through cheating, guaranteeing that all students are assessed equally for university admissions. This event underscores the significance of preserving the integrity and fairness of the examination process, ensuring that all students have an equal chance to excel based on their abilities.
“We continue to improve the security of exams in Pakistan and worldwide to ensure all students are treated equally. We are very grateful for your patience to this point and for your support as we help students understand the measures we are taking,” the letter from Cambridge stated.
“Cambridge International Education also issued a statement: “This type of event is an exceedingly uncommon phenomenon. We have enhanced our security protocols and introduced time-zone specific papers to avoid leaks from one region to another.”
